For more than two decades, the story of Gombe State politics has largely revolved around a handful of influential leaders whose decisions have shaped not only elections but also governance, development, and the direction of public affairs. From the pioneering administration of the late Governor Abubakar Habu Hashidu to the governments of Senator Danjuma Goje, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, each era has left a distinct mark on the state’s political and developmental journey. Ji Today, however, the emergence of Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna as the APC governorship candidate is introducing a fresh dimension to the conversation about who will shape the future of Gombe politics. The Foundations of Influence When Gombe State began its democratic journey in 1999, the late Abubakar Habu Hashidu faced the challenge of building institutions for a newly created state. During that period, one of the young administrators brought into public service was Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, who was appointed Chairman of the State Water Board. The position gave Gwamna an early opportunity to interact with communities across the state and gain practical experience in governance. Although his political profile would grow much later, his roots in public service can be traced back to the formative years of the state’s democratic experience. The political landscape changed significantly in 2003 with the emergence of Senator Danjuma Goje as governor. During his eight-year administration, Gombe witnessed major investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public institutions. His government also produced a generation of political leaders who would later become influential in their own right. Among them was Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who served as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development and became one of the most prominent figures in the administration. For years, Goje and Inuwa were seen as political allies working toward a common goal. Over time, however, politics took its natural
course. As ambitions evolved and leadership changed hands, the relationship between the two men transformed into one of the most significant political rivalries in Gombe’s history. Yet despite their differences, both remain widely acknowledged for their contributions to the state’s development. The Dankwambo Factor No discussion about Gombe’s political future can be complete without mentioning Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo. As governor from 2011 to 2019, Dankwambo presided over a period that saw investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public administration. Today, he remains the most prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State and continues to command considerable influence within the opposition. His presence ensures that the PDP remains a formidable political force and a key player in any discussion about the future of governance in the state. Enter Gwamna The emergence of Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna has altered the political equation. Unlike many politicians whose careers are linked to a single political bloc, Gwamna’s journey cuts across multiple generations of leadership. From his early appointment under Hashidu to his rise within the APC under Governor Inuwa Yahaya, he represents both continuity and change. His background in public administration, business, and corporate leadership has helped build an image of a technocrat entering the highest level of state politics. Should he win the governorship election, Gwamna would automatically become the leader of the ruling APC in Gombe State, a position that traditionally comes with significant political influence. A New Political Reality If Gwamna becomes governor, Gombe could witness a political structure unlike any it has experienced since 1999. For years, political influence in the state tended to revolve around one dominant figure at a time. The post-2027 period may be different. On one side would be Senator Danjuma Goje, one of the state’s most experienced political leaders and a former governor with a loyal political base. On another side would be Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, the face of the opposition and leader of the PDP in the state. Then there is Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, whose influence within the APC is expected to remain significant even after leaving office. At the centre of executive power would be Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, should he emerge victorious at the polls. The result could be a political landscape where influence is distributed among several major actors rather than concentrated in a single individual. The Road Ahead Whether this emerging reality leads to cooperation or competition remains to be seen. Political transitions often bring new alliances, fresh rivalries, and shifting loyalties. However, they also create opportunities for experienced leaders to work together in pursuit of a common goal. What is clear is that Gombe politics is entering a new phase. The conversation is no longer only about the relationship between Goje and Inuwa. Nor is it solely about APC and PDP. The emergence of Gwamna, alongside the continued relevance of Goje, Dankwambo, and Inuwa, suggests that the state’s next political chapter could be defined by multiple centres of influence competing, cooperating, and shaping the future of governance. As Gombe prepares for the years ahead, one question will continue to dominate political discussions: how will these influential figures navigate a changing political landscape where leadership, relevance, and influence are no longer the preserve of a single political heavyweight?
